What is meditation?

Meditation is a practice whereby a variety of mental and physical techniques are used to develop awareness of the present moment. It aims to sharpen focus and attention, clear the mind and achieve an emotionally calm and stable state.

Why is meditation important?

Scientific research has found that meditation can positively affect the brain, mental health and overall well-being. Those who meditate are likely to see the following benefits:

  • Decreased symptoms of anxiety, depression or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
  • Improved ability to think, concentrate and solve problems.
  • Better ability to adapt to and overcome emotional problems.

Examples of meditation

  • Body-centered meditation: recognizing and observing physical sensations in the body.
  • Contemplation: pondering a question, idea, paradox or situation with the aim of getting insight.
  • Mantra meditation: reciting (either aloud or silently) a phrase or sound to quiet and focus the mind.
  • Meditation with movement: focusing on breathing, performing specific body movements and/or mindful walking.
  • Mindfulness meditation: observing what is being sensed and felt in the moment fully, without interpretation or judgment.
