Workplace demoralization is when the confidence or “spirit” of an employee or employees is undermined, intentionally or unintentionally.
Feeling demoralized leads to feelings of anger, resentment, lack of motivation and lack of trust. Studies also find links to psychological distress and depression. Workplaces with demoralized workers have reduced productivity levels and a lower quality of customer service.
Studies show that employees who work in organizations that are indifferent to their emotional needs tend to feel demoralized more often than employees in workplaces where their feelings are recognized and taken seriously.
