What is diversity and inclusion?

In the workplace, diversity refers to the presence of differences—for example in race, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, age and socioeconomic class.

Workplace inclusion is the practice of ensuring that employees feel a sense of belonging and are supported by their organization when it comes to being their authentic selves.

Why is diversity and inclusion important?

The presence of diversity and inclusion not only enhances feelings of psychological safety, but employees who experience these also report higher commitment and higher job satisfaction, resulting in reduced turnover and company loyalty and strengthening employer branding.

Having diverse and inclusive teams has furthermore been found to positively impact creativity and innovation and therefore a company’s bottom line.

Examples of diversity and inclusion initiatives

  • Mandatory “unconscious bias” training for all managers and employees
  • Mentorship programs for underrepresented groups
  • Creation of employee resource groups (ERGs)
  • Highlighting diversity in job ads
  • Blind screening of résumés
  • Celebrating diverse holidays
  • Peer listening initiatives
